Happy May 1st! Here are some of our ideas of what to do in May while you are discovering Sarasota!

“April showers bring May flowers” is a proverb which was first recorded in 1886, but along with flowers
there are many events in May.

– May 4 is the Kentucky Derby: Many restaurants in downtown Sarasota and St. Armands Circle will be watching the 145th Kentucky Derby with its post time at 6:50 p.m. You can enjoy a happy hour while watching the exciting Run for the Roses.

– May 5 is Cinco de Mayo: For the Cinco de Mayo celebration and Mexican fare, Sarasota has an abundance of Mexican restaurants that will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, and not to be confused with the Mexican Independence Day which is celebrated on September 16.*

– May 12 is Mother’s Day: Mother’s Day was created in 1908 and became an official US holiday in 1914. It is observed by 40 plus countries sometime between March through May.* It’s the busiest day of the year in the restaurant business, so why not get Mom a Key Culinary tour Gift Certificate she can use any time, or better yet take her on a food tour yourself! This way you can get some Sarasota history and have a leisurely and tasty tour of local restaurants in the Sarasota area and spend time with her. There are several unique shops in the Circle for Mother’s Day gifts too.

– May 27 is Memorial Day: Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a Federal holiday in the United States for remembering and honoring American soldiers who have died in military service.* There are many events happening around Sarasota County during the Memorial Day weekend. One very special event is the Memorial Day parade which is held on May 27 at 10:00 a.m. and takes place on downtown Main Street from Osprey Street to Gulf Stream. It’s a great way to start your holiday, then brunch in one of the many great restaurants in downtown Sarasota.

Besides these four scheduled celebrations, there are many other interesting events going on in May in Sarasota County.
-May 3 through May 5 you can take in the Venice Seafood & Music Festival in Centennial Park. While you are in Venice take our family friendly ‘Shark’s Teeth & More’ tour which includes some ‘bites’ for lunch.
